Will my scooter run better on Av gas?

I have an 05 150cc Scooter with the Honda Cloned GY-6 motor, I work at an airport and we dump our fuel samples in a tank to recycle. Will my Scooter run on 100 octane fuel with a low lead content?

To make any difference you would need to raise the compression.

  1. Not really. The lowest AV gas I know of is 100 octane and that is high enough to burn your valves. In my old Hot Rod days (auto-mechanics in vocational high-school) we rebuilt many engines for more power and speed. Among other things, we used sodium filled valves so that we could use AV gas.

  2. No, it will not run any better.

The only difference between 100 octane AV gas and 87 octane unleaded is the octane.

It is not bad for your engine, but is a waste of your money.

The octane rating is the fuel's resistance to spontaneous combustion under compression. The higher the octane rating, the more compression it takes to make the fuel spontaneously combust.

A high compression engine requires higher octane fuel to prevent detonation. Detonation is a condition where the fuel air mixture ignites while being compressed before the spark plug fires. Detonation can cause serious internal damage to an engine.

Your scooter does not have a high compression engine. You don't really need to use a higher octane fuel until you go over 10 to 1 compression.

The higher octane fuel will not make your scooter run any better or last any longer. You are only giving the oil companies more money than you need to. I think they make enough money already.

Higher octane fuel burns slower. If the octane is too high for a low compression engine like yours, you may actually lose power.

The link below will tell you all about how gasoline works. The 4th page of the article explains octane.

If you want more speed from your scooter, sell it. Use the money from the sale and buy something with a larger engine.

  4. Yes you can burn 100LL av gas in your scooter. I have been doing it for over 10 years with no problems. I also mix the fuel with a stabilizer. I was in the army and when we drained the tanks for fuel samples I would save the fuel and put it in my scooter, or a one gallon fuel can. At the time I had a Honda Helix.
